Modal has become a sought-after material for a myriad of reasons. It's most known for it's lustrous finish, beautiful drape and its soft hand. Other reasons it’s popular for underwear, loungewear, activewear, and bedding is that the cellulose fibers make it less favorable for bacterial growth. It's 50% more moisture-absorbing and retains its shape better than cotton. With the common heat surges many mamas experience, it's important that the fabric is breathable. With modal, sweat is able to travel through the fabric and evaporate on the surface so it won’t be trapped, producing damp and icky odors.
Not all modal is equal in quality. TENCEL™ Modal is a trademark of LENZING AG, one of the world's leading producers of modal, and they use innovative technologies which allow them to recover up to 95% of their production materials. Made from European beechwood trees, TENCEL™ Modal is harvested from sustainable forests where 99% of the raw material comes from certified or controlled sources. Their fibers are certified as compostable and biodegradable under industrial, home, soil and marine conditions, enabling them to fully revert back to nature and re-enter the eco-system.

Combed cotton is a softer version of your average cotton. By undergoing an additional step during the manufacturing process that combs away impurities and short fibers causing breakage and fraying, we are left with longer and straighter fibers. The fibers are then able to join more securely as they’re spun into threads, ultimately resulting in a stronger, smoother and softer material.
